A Search for a Diffuse Flux of Astrophysical Muon Neutrinos with the IceCube 40-String Detector

2011

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a 1 km$^{3}$ detector currently taking data at the South Pole. One of the main strategies used to look for astrophysical neutrinos with IceCube is the search for a diffuse flux of high-energy neutrinos from unresolved sources. A hard energy spectrum of neutrinos from isotropically distributed astrophysical sources could manifest itself as a detectable signal that may be differentiated from the atmospheric neutrino background by spectral measurement. This analysis uses data from the IceCube detector collected in its half completed configuration which operated between April 2008 and May 2009 to search for a diffuse flux of astrophysical muon neutrinos. A to…

Ionization and scintillation response of high-pressure xenon gas to alpha particles

2013

High-pressure xenon gas is an attractive detection medium for a variety of applications in fundamental and applied physics. In this paper we study the ionization and scintillation detection properties of xenon gas at 10 bar pressure. For this purpose, we use a source of alpha particles in the NEXT-DEMO time projection chamber, the large scale prototype of the NEXT-100 neutrinoless double beta decay experiment, in three different drift electric field configurations. We measure the ionization electron drift velocity and longitudinal diffusion, and compare our results to expectations based on available electron scattering cross sections on pure xenon. In addition, two types of measurements add…

Contribution of recently measured nuclear data to reactor antineutrino energy spectra predictions

2013

This paper attempts to summarize the actual problematic of reactor antineutrino energy spectra in the frame of fundamental and applied neutrino physics. Nuclear physics is an important ingredient of reactor antineutrino experiments. These experiments are motivated by neutrino oscillations, i.e. the measure of the θ 13 mixing angle. In 2011, after a new computation of the reactor antineutrino energy spectra, based on the conversion of integral data of the beta spectra from 235 U, and 239;241 Pu, a deficit of reactor antineutrinos measured by short baseline experiments was pointed out. This is called the “reactor anomaly”, a new puzzle in the neutrino physics area. Since then, numerous new ex…

The essay examines some problems posed by the so-called French amortization method to observe that most of the debated problems arise from the difficult dialogue between jurists and financial mathematicians. …

Design and analysis of discrete choice experiments for models with response time

2013

Settore SECS-S/02 - Statistica Per La Ricerca Sperimentale E TecnologicaA sector of conjoint analysis (experimental design in marketing research) is made of the so called choice experiments. In choice experiments respondents undergo a questionnaire which is nowadays mostly submitted through the internet. The questionnaire proposes to the respondent a sequence of choice sets each one including two or more profiles being a profile a specific combination of attribute levels. The respondent selects the preferred profile for each choice set. Responses given by a sample of respondents are analysed through suitable methods aimed to eventually find the best combination of attribute levels. One method of analysis adopts the Multinomial Logit (MLN) model. In this article the authors show the results of the MLN analysis compared with another model of analysis which uses an additional response which can be easily recorded by electronically submitted questionnaires. In practice modern survey platforms like “Qualtrics” (the one used for this work) can record the so called “response latency” i.e. the time taken by the respondent to make the choice and select the most preferred profile in the choice set. Thanks to a response latency model further refined in this work it is possible to deduce the relative weight of importance of the profiles for each choice set and respondent. This type of response can be used in place of the dichotomous choice variable in the MLN model. The two models and methods of analysis are deeply compared and it is critically discussed when it is better to use one or the other method. As a result a more reliable estimate of the optimal profile comes up implying lower risks for new investments and marketing decisions.

Present-day use of an empirical wave prediction method

2016

Knowledge of the offshore wave climate is key to the design of coastal engineering structures and to the study of shoreline evolution. To date, the available wave data have been limited both in time and space; even though there are several options for obtaining wave data calculated using complex numerical models at basin scale, design issues can in some cases be solved by means of simpler models. This paper shows whether, under certain conditions and in an enclosed basin, an old empirical model can provide results that are good enough to determine the design condition necessary for engineering purposes. The empirical model chosen to answer this question is called Sverdrup–Munk–Bretschneide…

Statistical Learning for End-to-End Simulations

2018

End-to-end mission performance simulators (E2ES) are suitable tools to accelerate satellite mission development from concet to deployment. One core element of these E2ES is the generation of synthetic scenes that are observed by the various instruments of an Earth Observation mission. The generation of these scenes rely on Radiative Transfer Models (RTM) for the simulation of light interaction with the Earth surface and atmosphere. However, the execution of advanced RTMs is impractical due to their large computation burden. Classical interpolation and statistical emulation methods of pre-computed Look-Up Tables (LUT) are therefore common practice to generate synthetic scenes in a reasonable…

Phase error analysis of clipped waveforms in surface topography measurement using projected fringes

2021

Abstract When working with the method of projected fringes outside the optical laboratory one often encounters the problem of uncontrollable ambient light. This might cause saturation of the camera which in turn results in clipping of the fringes. Since standard theories describing phase-shifting techniques assume the projected fringes to be purely sinusoidal, such clipping will result in measurement error. In this paper a detailed analysis of this problem is given, and relations between phase errors, the amount of fringe clipping and the number of phase steps are found. Moreover, the phase difference between the clipped and the unclipped fringes is described. This investigation is based on…
